A Druid of the 6th century
The first model of Magician (Merlín) goes back in Myrddin's name in orals Welsh legends. Actually it's a question of a double figure: one son of the devil, and nordic other one that according to Welsh poems fought against the king Rhydderch of Dunbarton and went mad in a battle, retinring as prophet to the Caledonian Forest. In this poems, he appears as a Celtic Druid proided wih prophetic and divinatory power. The historian Geoffrey Ashe says that it was a british prehistoric god, but her arguments aren't convincing.
